April Library Services

BCC Students, we hope you are keeping well, all things considered, in this most atypical of semesters. But we in Southeast North Carolina are used to extended closures for hurricanes and weather – so we are most definitely equipped to handle the stress that COVID-19 is throwing our way right now. Sending strength!

A quick update for you about BCC Library services for April.

Checked-Out Materials

Like campus, we continue to be closed to ensure the safety of our community. If you have any library materials currently checked out, please don’t worry! All checked-out library materials are not accruing fines while BCC campus is closed due to coronavirus; library users will only be responsible for bills resulting from any lost items. Users are encouraged to keep hold of checked-out library materials until BCC campus reopens and materials can be safely returned.

Research Help from Liza

Liza continues to provide on-demand, real-time library assistance via chat. Here is her April schedule (outside of these hours, our excellent Chatstaff Librarians will field our chats, 24/7, as normal):

  • Tuesdays, 12-7:30pm
  • Wednesdays, 12-7:30pm
  • Thursdays, 12-7:30pm
  • Saturdays, 12-7:30pm

So please “stop” by if you need help! This screenshot shows you how to locate the Chatstaff button in the Library Portal.

Off-Campus Access to BCC Library Databases

Here are the instructions for accessing BCC Library databases from home: https://brunswickcc.libguides.com/blog/Single-Sign-on-Is-Here

If you experience any problems with logging in, please let Liza know and/or report problems using this form: https://brunswickcc.libwizard.com/f/proxy

Finally, Fun Stuff!

And, remember, the library has access to some excellent (and entertaining!) resources, especially if you and your family are in need of diversion. Here are our favorites from our A-Z Database List (http://brunswickcc.libguides.com/az.php):

Popular
The Feature Films for Education Collection offers hundreds of full-length feature films for educational instructional purposes. (Not a Gale or NC LIVE resource)

The Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) provides access to millions of photographs, manuscripts, books, sounds, moving images, and more from libraries, archives, and museums across the United States. Find primary sources to use in school projects, academic research, family history research, and more. (NC LIVE)

A language-learning software with over 70 world language courses and over 17 ESL/ELL courses, featuring an engaging user interface, voice comparison, fresh design, foreign language films, cultural anecdotes, and a user-friendly mobile app. (NC LIVE)

A downloadable eBook collection with books contributed from libraries across the country. Create a username and password to borrow up to five books at a time. (NC LIVE)

Downloadable audio and ebooks on a variety of topics, including language learning, history, biography, classic literature, and more. Compatible with most iPods and WMA compatible MP3 players. (NC LIVE)

If you need help getting started with any of these databases, please let Liza know.

Hang in there, BCC! We’re with you every step of the way!

Sincerely,

Carmen, Liza, Delois, & Mary
